Scientific Name | Serruria phylicoides (P.J.Bergius) R.Br. |
Higher Classification | Dicotyledons |
Family | PROTEACEAE |
Synonyms | Serruria barbigera Salisb. ex Knight |
Common Names | Bearded Spiderhead (e) |
National Status |
Status and Criteria | Least Concern |
Assessment Date | 2019/04/15 |
Assessor(s) | A.G. Rebelo, H. Mtshali & L. von Staden |
Justification | Serruria phylicoides has a restricted distribution range, with an extent of occurrence (EOO) of 6141 km². Within its range, it is frequently encountered as dense stands, and although there are ongoing threats to some subpopulations, it is not in danger of extinction. It is therefore listed as Least Concern. |
Distribution |
Endemism | South African endemic |
Provincial distribution | Western Cape |
Range | This species has a restricted distribution in the mountains of the Western Cape Province, South Africa, where it occurs from the Du Toit's Kloof to Hottentots-Holland, Riviersonderend and Kleinrivier mountains. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | South Sonderend Sandstone Fynbos, North Sonderend Sandstone Fynbos, Overberg Sandstone Fynbos, Kogelberg Sandstone Fynbos, Hawequas Sandstone Fynbos |
Description | It grows on sandstone slopes and flats, 70-1600 m. Mature individuals are killed by fires, and only seeds survive. Seeds are released after ripening, and dispersed by ants to their underground nests, where they are protected from predation and fire. It is pollinated by insects. |
Threats |
About 9% of this species' habitat is already irreversibly modified, predominantly due to vineyards and crop cultivation.
Recent field observations indicate that alien invasive plants are spreading into this species' habitat along the southern slopes of the Riviersonderend, Du Toit's Kloof, Hottentots Holland and some parts of Kleinrivier mountains. |
Population |
This species is most frequently encountered as dense isolated patches. The population is currently declining at a slow rate due to ongoing habitat degradation from invasive alien plant infestations.

Population trend | Stable |
