Star Spiderhead

Taxonomy
Scientific Name
Serruria stellata Rourke
Higher Classification
Dicotyledons
Family
PROTEACEAE
Common Names
Star Spiderhead (e)
National Status
Status and Criteria
Vulnerable D2
Assessment Date
2019/02/04
Assessor(s)
A.G. Rebelo, H. Mtshali & L. von Staden
Justification
Serruria stellata is known from three locations where it is potentially threatened by habitat loss to protea cultivation and competition from alien invasive plants. It therefore qualifies for listing as Vulnerable under criterion D.
Distribution
Endemism
South African endemic
Provincial distribution
Western Cape
Range
This species is confined to Stettynsberg and the western Riviersonderend Mountains.
Habitat and Ecology
Major system
Terrestrial
Major habitats
South Sonderend Sandstone Fynbos, North Sonderend Sandstone Fynbos, Hawequas Sandstone Fynbos
Description
It grows on high altitude sandy flats. It is a long-lived species, and survives fires by resprouting from underground boles or rootstocks. Seeds are relased after ripening. Pollinators are not known.
Threats
There is no significant ongoing habitat loss, but some subpopulations are potentially vulnerable to habitat loss to protea orchards, and habitat degradation due to alien invasive plants which are already present at low densities on the northern slopes of Riviersonderend and Stettynsberg.
Population

This species is locally abundant, and is known from four subpopulations, that occur at three locations. The population is stable, but is likely to decline in the near future if alien invasive plants are not managed.

Population trend
Stable
Conservation
A few plants occur in the Riviersonderend Nature Reserve.
