Scientific Name | Rhinephyllum inaequale L.Bolus |
Higher Classification | Dicotyledons |
Family | AIZOACEAE |
Synonyms | Rhinephyllum inaequale L.Bolus var. latipetalum L.Bolus |
National Status |
Status and Criteria | Endangered B1ab(iii,v)+2ab(iii,v) |
Assessment Date | 2016/01/11 |
Assessor(s) | L. von Staden & P.M. Burgoyne |
Justification | Rhinephyllum inaequale has an extent of occurrence (EOO) of 280 km² and is known from two locations. It is declining due to habitat loss and degradation, as well as collecting of wild plants for the succulent trade. It is therefore listed as Endangered under criteria B1ab(iii,v)+2ab(iii,v). |
Distribution |
Endemism | South African endemic |
Provincial distribution | Eastern Cape |
Range | This species is endemic to South Africa, and is found on the plains south of Graaff-Reinet. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | Eastern Lower Karoo, Southern Karoo Riviere |
Description | It grows in crevices in sandstone outcrops. |
Threats |
Rhinephyllum inaequale is threatened by ongoing habitat degradation as a result of overgrazing and trampling by livestock. It is a very rare and highly sought-after succulent, and losses to succulent collecting have been observed at one known location (P.M. Burgoyne pers. comm., Jan 2016). It is likely to lose further habitat in future if planned shale gas extraction in the area is to go ahead. |
Population |
This is an extremely rare and localized species. It was last recorded in the 1940s, and recently rediscovered. Subpopulations of this species are small.
