Assessor(s)
L. von Staden & P.M. Burgoyne
Justification
Rhinephyllum inaequale has an extent of occurrence (EOO) of 280 km² and is known from two locations. It is declining due to habitat loss and degradation, as well as collecting of wild plants for the succulent trade. It is therefore listed as Endangered under criteria B1ab(iii,v)+2ab(iii,v).
Distribution
Endemism
South African endemic
Provincial distribution
Eastern Cape
Range
This species is endemic to South Africa, and is found on the plains south of Graaff-Reinet.
Habitat and Ecology
Major system
Terrestrial
Major habitats
Eastern Lower Karoo, Southern Karoo Riviere
Description
It grows in crevices in sandstone outcrops.
Threats
Rhinephyllum inaequale is threatened by ongoing habitat degradation as a result of overgrazing and trampling by livestock. It is a very rare and highly sought-after succulent, and losses to succulent collecting have been observed at one known location (P.M. Burgoyne pers. comm., Jan 2016). It is likely to lose further habitat in future if planned shale gas extraction in the area is to go ahead.
Population

This is an extremely rare and localized species. It was last recorded in the 1940s, and recently rediscovered. Subpopulations of this species are small.
