Taxonomy
Scientific Name
Turraea streyi F.White & Styles
Higher Classification
Dicotyledons
Family
MELIACEAE
National Status
Status and Criteria
Critically Endangered (Possibly Extinct)
Assessment Date
2007/10/01
Assessor(s)
L. von Staden
Justification
Two known wild subpopulations disappeared as a result of dense invasive alien encroachment, and one introduced subpopulation of three individuals remains near the type locality. More than 80% of its coastal habitat has been transformed due to sugarcane cultivation, coastal development and alien plant invasion. There is little hope that it could be found elsewhere in the former range.
Distribution
Endemism

Provincial distribution

Range

Habitat and Ecology
Major system
Terrestrial
Major habitats
Pondoland-Ugu Sandstone Coastal Sourveld, KwaZulu-Natal Coastal Belt Grassland
Description
Coastal grassland, in partial shade in and around the margins of scrub forest and bush clumps, 30-100 m.
Threats
KwaZulu-Natal Coastal Belt grassland is one of the most extensively transformed vegetation types in KwaZulu-Natal. In the last 100 years more than 80% of grasslands along the coast (below 100 m, the specific habitat of this species) have been converted mainly to sugarcane, but in the last 30 years coastal development has also taken a significant toll. There is little hope that this species could still be relocated elsewhere in its former range. Additional threats such as invasive alien encroachment have led to the loss of two known existing subpopulations.

Conservation
An introduced subpopulation is protected in Skyline Nature Reserve.
