This taxon is widespread, but poorly known. It is suspected to be overlooked, and not in danger of extinction.

Range
This taxon is possibly widespread across eastern South Africa, but its distribution is difficult to determine as sterile collections are identical to C. submersum. It is widespread, but rarely recorded across Africa, possibly extending as far as India and the Pacific Islands.

Description
It occurs in slow-flowing or stagnant water including seasonal highly alkaline lakes and pools, not found in brackish estuarine conditions.
Population

This taxon is known from scattered records in the southern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal north coast and the Lowveld.
