Assessment Date

Assessor(s)
L. von Staden, D. Raimondo & G. Nicolson
Justification
A highly range-restricted species with an extent of occurrence (EOO) of 7 km². Most of the natural vegetation within its known range has been irreversibly modified. It was assessed as Critically Endangered Possibly Extinct in 2018 based on the last collection of it having been made in 1944. In 2021 it was recorded during an Environmental Impact Assessment for an agricultural crop application on the only remaining remant of lowland vegetation within the Hex River Valley. Given ongoing pressure to transform this species' habitat for crops it is listed as Critically Endangered under criterion B.
Distribution
Endemism
South African endemic
Provincial distribution
Western Cape
Range
This species is endemic to the Westerna Cape, South Africa, and is found in the Hex River Valley.
Habitat and Ecology
Major system
Terrestrial
Major habitats
Breede Alluvium Fynbos
Description
It occurs in sandy flats and lower slopes.
Threats
Based on altitude notes on specimens it appears that this species is restricted to lower slopes and flats. These areas within the Hex River Valley has been extensively converted to vineyards, as well as lost to urban expansion around De Doorns. It does not occur in disturbed areas and currently remains in the only lowland remnant remaining in the valley. There is ongoing pressure to convert this last remaining natural lowland remnant to vines. In addition surrounding farming practises are causing slow habitat degradation to the edges of the fragment.
Population

The only remaining population consists of between 500 and 1000 plants it occurs as scattered clumps between shrubs.
