Conophytum semivestitum L.Bolus
Status and Criteria
Critically Endangered (Possibly Extinct)
A.J. Young & L. von Staden
A distinct, but rare and very poorly known species, last recorded in the wild in the 1930s. Collections provide very imprecise locality descriptions, but many field surveys in the wider area where it is presumed to have been recorded from have failed to relocate it in the wild. It is possibly extinct, but may also be overlooked.
South African endemic
Bushmanland, exact locality unknown.
Habitat and Ecology
Unknown, presumably grew on quartzite or feldspar.
Threats to this species are unknown. It may have declined due to road construction, mining, or overgrazing.
This species is only known from a drawing, based on plants collected somewhere in Bushmanland in the 1930s. It was thought to have been collected in the vicinity of Jakkalswater between Steinkopf and Vioolsdrif, but many field searches in this remote area have failed to relocate the population. There was one later collection, but the locality is not specified. It is possibly extinct, but without precise locality information, it is almost impossible to determine with certainty if it is extinct or not.
