Aristea ecklonii is widespread and has an extent of occurrence (EOO) of 470939 km². There are more than 100 subpopulations known and it is not in danger of extinction. It is therefore assessed as Least Concern.

Range
This species is widespread across eastern South Africa, from the Soutpansberg in northern Limpopo Province to the southern Cape. It is widespread through eastern and tropical Africa as far as Cameroon.

It occurs in shaded moist habitats at the margins of forests, or along streams and in dry river beds in forests, 0-2000 m.
