Justification
A widespread species, with an extent of occurrence (EOO) of 20 820 km², and an area of occupancy (AOO) of 148 km². It occurs along the inland arid escarpment from the Bokkeveld to Ceres on rocky habitats where it is not threatened. It is therefore listed as Least Concern.

Range
This species is endemic to South Africa, and extends from the Bokkeveld Mountains and Klein Roggeveld in the Northern Cape to the interior Cold Bokkeveld as far south as Karoopoort and the foot of the Witteberg between Matjiesfontein and Laingsburg in the Western Cape.

Description
It occurs on dry rocky sandstone or dolerite slopes and flats in arid fynbos or renosterveld, or karroid bush.
Threats
This species has no severe threats. It has lost only 4% of its habitat (calculated using landcover data in GIS).
Population

There are many recent observations of this species on iNaturalist indicating that it occurs at more than 40 locations.

Notes
It was previously included by Lewis (1959) in the species that she called Babiana truncata (now B. flabellifolia) but comparison of live plants shows that the population from the south of the range of that species represent a distinct species, geographically and edaphically separated from B. truncata (Goldblatt and Manning 2004).
