National Status

Least Concern
Assessment Date

Justification
This species occurs in a poorly explored area of South Africa and is known from 12 subpopulations. It has an extent of occurrence (EOO) of 8334 km², and an area of occupancy (AOO) of 64 km². There are likely to be more subpopulations in large areas of pristine habitat. The area has great potential for the expansion of highly destructive open cast mining, and although this species is not threatened at present, the situation should be monitored and it should be listed in future if necessary. It is widespread, and is therefore listed as Least Concern.
Distribution
Endemism
South African endemic
Provincial distribution
Northern Cape, Western Cape
Range
This species is endemic to South Africa, and is restricted to the Namaqualand coastal plain between Soutfontein, south of Wallekraal in the Northern Cape, to Koekenaap near the mouth of the Olifants River in the Western Cape.
Habitat and Ecology
Major system
Terrestrial
Major habitats
Fynbos, Succulent Karoo
Description
It occurs in sandy flats, usually in deep sand.
Threats
It has lost only 8% of its habitat (calculated using landcover data in GIS). At present, it is widespread and faces a few threats. It does however occur in an area suitable for open cast mining and it must be monitored to ensure subpopulations are not lost in the future.
Population

Observations on iNaturalist note that this species can be quite common in deep sands but occurs patchily. It is known from at least 12 different subpopulations and is still likely undersampled.
