Justification
This Western Cape endemic has a very restricted range, and has an extent of occurrence (EOO) of 65 km², and an area of occupancy (AOO) of 28 km². It is known from four locations on the Paardeberg mountain range and one location near Malmesbury. It has lost its habitat to orchard cultivation in the past. There is an ongoing slow decline in habitat quality as a result of invasive alien plants. It is therefore listed as Endangered under criterion B.
Distribution
Endemism
South African endemic
Provincial distribution
Western Cape
Range
This species is endemic to the Western Cape Province of South Africa, and is found in Paardeberg between Malmesbury and Agterpaarl.
Habitat and Ecology
Major system
Terrestrial
Major habitats
Swartland Granite Renosterveld, Boland Granite Fynbos
Description
It occurs on granite outcrops in fynbos.
Threats
It has lost 47% of its habitat (calculated using landcover data in GIS) to vineyards and fruit orchards in the past. There is no current ongoing agricultural expansion, and most of this species' remaining habitat is now conserved. Alien invasive species are present in moderate densities in parts of its habitat, and could become a threat in future if left unmanaged.
Population

The two known subpopulations occur on the Paardeberg and in Malmesbury. There is no data available that indicates the size of the Malmesbury subpopulation, however, the remaining two stands in Paardeberg have fewer than 250 mature individuals each. A comprehensive count has not been undertaken but the subpopulation at Paardeberg is suspected to be between 300 and 1000 individuals. The population is declining due to ongoing habitat degradation by invasive alien plant species.
