Justification
This species has an extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) of 12 km². It is known from one small subpopulation. A total of 70% of this species' habitat has been lost to ploughing for wheat since the 1940s. Although it is not currently declining, it is potentially threatened by encroachment from invasive alien grasses or future ploughing for crop cultivation. It is therefore listed as Vulnerable under criterion D.
Distribution
Endemism
South African endemic
Provincial distribution
Northern Cape
Range
It is endemic to South Africa, and is found on the Bokkeveld Plateau near Nieuwoudtville and a short distance to the south in the Northern Cape.
Habitat and Ecology
Major system
Terrestrial
Major habitats
Nieuwoudtville Shale Renosterveld
Description
It occurs in Renosterveld on stony clay soil derived from Dwyka tillite.
Threats
70% of this species' habitat (renosterveld on tillite) has been lost to ploughing since the 1940s. This species faces the potential threat of further loss of habitat to ploughing a plausible scenario if the land changes hands. It is also potentially threatened by the spread of invasive alien grass species.
Population

It is known from one subpopulation. It is uncertain whether four of the mere six records for the species are still extant due to habitat loss.
