Family | IRIDACEAE |
National Status |
Status and Criteria | Vulnerable D1+2 |
Assessment Date | 2023/06/17 |
Assessor(s) | P. Goldblatt, R.C. Turner & T. Patel |
Justification | This species has an extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) of 16 km². It is known from one location on a roadside cutting and is potentially threatened by erosion and road verge clearing. It is therefore listed as Vulnerable under criteria D. |
Distribution |
Endemism | South African endemic |
Provincial distribution | Western Cape |
Range | It is endemic to Western Cape province of South Africa, and is only known from Gydo Pass in the Ceres District. |

Threats |
It is potentially threatened by too frequent fire, erosion of roadside embankments, and road verge clearing. Habitat beyond steep slopes above the road are cultivated and very little remains. |
Population |
It is known from only a handful of collections, all from the same site. The population has a stable trend. Surveys between 2016 and 2018 noted 230 mature individuals however the actual number is likely to be higher as the vegetation at the time of surveys was senescent and this species, like others in this genus, flowers most profusely after fire, hence an accurate determination of population size is only possible once the site has been burnt.
