Justification
This is a widespread and relatively common species, with an extent of occurrence (EOO) of 26 008 km², and an area of occupancy (AOO) of 292 km². It is known from at least 40 subpopulations, and is still common in spite of extensive habitat loss. Although the population continues to decline, it is not yet in danger of extinction. It is therefore listed as Least Concern.
Distribution
Endemism
South African endemic
Provincial distribution
Western Cape
Range
An endemic to the Western Cape province, South Africa, occurring from Piketberg in the north to the Cape Peninsula and east to Bredasdorp and Swellendam.
Habitat and Ecology
Major system

Major habitats
Fynbos
Description
It occurs on clay flats and slopes in renosterveld.
Threats
This species has lost more than 80% of its habitat to urban and agricultural expansion. Most subpopulations occur on small remnants, which continue to be lost and degraded due to development, inappropriate fire management, overgrazing and spreading, unmanaged alien invasive plants.
Population

A population reduction of >50% could be inferred from extensive habitat loss, however, this decline occurred over a period exceeding three generations. Despite this substantial reduction, the species remains relatively common. Recent field observations confirm its presence in at least 30 locations, where subpopulations are notable, comprising several hundred to several thousand mature individuals. The population however continues to decline due to ongoing habitat loss and degradation.
