This species has an extent of occurrence (EOO) of 38 987 km² and an area of occupancy (AOO) of 684 km². It is commonly recorded within its range and is therefore listed as Least Concern.

It is endemic to the Western Cape, South Africa, extending from the Cape Peninsula north to the Olifants River Mountains and east to the Langeberg at Gracia's Pass.

Description
It occurs mainly in montane environments at middle to upper elevations but also at low elevations near the coast. It is also found in stony sandstone soils and is usually very common after fires.
Threats
This species has lost habitat to agriculture (livestock and crops), too irregular fires and competition from invasive alien species. However it remains extremely common and is not in danger of extinction.

The population has a stable trend and is known from hundreds of subpopulations.
