Justification
This taxon is widespread with an extent of occurrence (EOO) of 35 692 km², and an area of occupancy (AOO) of 100 km². It is known from between 18 and 24 subpopulations, and is not in danger of extinction. It is therefore listed as Least Concern.

Description
It occurs in stony shale, clay, granite or sandstone, often wedged among rocks.
Threats
In South Africa, this subspecies has lost only 7% of its habitat (calculated using landcover data in GIS) from habitat degradation through agriculture and habitat loss through infrastructure development. It is also under threat by harvesting (gathering), however, it is not in danger of extinction.

The population has a stable trend, and is known from between 18 and 24 subpopulations. No record gives an indication of population size.
