(later homonym), not of Lam. (1791), Ixia milleri P.J.Bergius | Common Names | Frieskalossie (a), Geelkalossie (a), Geelklossie (a) |
National Status | Status and Criteria | Near Threatened B1ab(i,ii,iii,iv,v)+2ab(i,ii,iii,iv,v) | Assessment Date | 2015/06/30 | Assessor(s) | D. Raimondo & L. von Staden | Justification | EOO 6201 km², declining due to ongoing conversion of its habitat for urban development and agricultural crops (wheat, vineyards, citrus, Rooibos and potatoes). Between 14 and 20 locations remain and decline is approaching thresholds for a vulnerable listing. |
Distribution | Endemism | South African endemic | Provincial distribution | Western Cape | Range | Piketberg to Durbanville and Bloubergstrand. |
Habitat and Ecology | Major system | Terrestrial | Major habitats | Swartland Shale Renosterveld, Swartland Granite Renosterveld, Swartland Silcrete Renosterveld, Swartland Alluvium Renosterveld, Cape Flats Sand Fynbos, Atlantis Sand Fynbos, Hopefield Sand Fynbos | Description | Seasonally waterlogged sandy or granitic soils. |
Threats | Ongoing conversion of its habitat for wheat, vineyards, rooibos and potato cultivation and urban development. |
Population | The population of this formerly extremely common taxon has been greatly reduced through habitat loss. It is still relatively common in the Malmesbury-Darling area, where it persists in a number of private and provincial nature reserves. However, it has not been seen in the Paarl area since 1965, despite recent collecting focus on threatened lowland habitats in this area, and it is presumed locally extinct. All known subpopulations occur on small fragments and continue to decline due to ongoing habitat loss and degradation.
