Description
Clay soils on south-facing slopes in lee of rocks or under shrubs.
Threats
This species occurs in remote, sheltered valleys of the central mountains of the Richtersveld, where grazing pressure is currently low. However, as rangelands on the plains and closer to settlements are becoming increasingly degraded, herders are moving their flocks into ever more remote areas in search of grazing. A livestock outpost has been established near at least one known subpopulation of this species, but is currently visited for only a few months of the year, and the natural vegetation is still in very good condition. However, should grazing pressure increase, this species could decline rapidly as subpopulations are very localized.
Population

Gladiolus deserticola is localized, but locally abundant in suitable habitat.
