National Status |
Status and Criteria | Vulnerable D2 |
Assessment Date | 2005/09/08 |
Assessor(s) | P. Goldblatt, D. Raimondo & K. Naidoo |
Justification | This species has an area of occupancy (AOO) of less than 20 km². It is known from three locations and is potentially threatened by agricultural expansion. It therefore qualifies as Vulnerable under criterion D. |
Distribution |
Endemism | South African endemic |
Provincial distribution | Northern Cape |
Range | It occurs in the Bokkeveld Escarpment. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |

Description | Plants grow on tillite clay soils in renosterveld. |
Threats |
80% of the species' range is gone because of agriculture (P. Goldblatt and J. Manning 2005). Data from conservation farming state that it is restricted to 2 vegetation types: (1) NV Tillite Renosterveld North sands, which had 31.12 km² of which 80% has been transformed and the remaining area is 6.1 km² and (2) the Nieuwoudtville Renosterveld/Karoo mosaic that had 22.3 km², 30% of its area has been transformed leaving just 14.88 km² still intact. The remaining area of vegetation type is 20.98 km²; given that this species only occurs on Northern slopes its AOO within these vegetation types is definitely less than 20 km². |
