Scientific Name | Moraea bubalina Goldblatt |
Higher Classification | Monocotyledons |
Family | IRIDACEAE |
National Status |
Status and Criteria | Least Concern |
Assessment Date | 2018/09/29 |
Assessor(s) | L. von Staden |
Justification | Moraea bubalina is a range-restricted species, with an extent of occurrence (EOO) of 1012 km². It is currently known from four locations, but likely to be overlooked and more common than records suggest. It has no severe threats and is not suspected to be in danger of extinction. It is therefore listed as Least Concern. |
Distribution |
Endemism | South African endemic |
Provincial distribution | Northern Cape, Western Cape |
Range | This species is endemic to South Africa, and is found from Vanrhynsdorp to the southern Bokkeveld Escarpment. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | Tanqua Karoo, Hantam Karoo, Klawer Sandy Shrubland, Vanrhynsdorp Gannabosveld |
Description | It grows in clay gravel flats and on slopes. |
Threats |
Historically, about 18% of this species' habitat has been ploughed for crop cultivation. Land cover data however show no significant ongoing expansion of crop fields - the area where it occurs is only marginally suited to agriculture. |
Population |
Moraea bubalina is known from only a few collections, but field observations indicate that it is fairly common within the Vanrhynsdorp, Calvinia and Clanwilliam districts. It is probably overlooked as flowers open only in the late afternoon and have a dull, inconspicuous colour (Goldblatt 1976).
