Justification
Moraea bubalina is a range-restricted species, with an extent of occurrence (EOO) of 1012 km². It is currently known from four locations, but likely to be overlooked and more common than records suggest. It has no severe threats and is not suspected to be in danger of extinction. It is therefore listed as Least Concern.

Threats
Historically, about 18% of this species' habitat has been ploughed for crop cultivation. Land cover data however show no significant ongoing expansion of crop fields - the area where it occurs is only marginally suited to agriculture.
Population

Moraea bubalina is known from only a few collections, but field observations indicate that it is fairly common within the Vanrhynsdorp, Calvinia and Clanwilliam districts. It is probably overlooked as flowers open only in the late afternoon and have a dull, inconspicuous colour (Goldblatt 1976).
