Justification
Moraea crispa is a widespread and very common species that is not in danger of extinction. It has an extent of occurrence (EOO) of 96 726 km² and is therefore listed as Least Concern.
Distribution
Endemism
South African endemic
Provincial distribution
Eastern Cape, Free State, Northern Cape, Western Cape
Range
This species is endemic to South Africa, and is found from the Bokkeveld Escarpment and Calvinia to Cederberg, Witteberg, Swartberg and Baviaanskloof Mountains. It is widespread across the Great Karoo, extending as far as the western Free State.
Habitat and Ecology
Major system
Terrestrial
Major habitats
Eastern Little Karoo, Eastern Upper Karoo, Gamka Karoo, Tarkastad Montane Shrubland, Karoo Escarpment Grassland, Uniondale Shale Renosterveld, Nardouw Sandstone Fynbos, Kouga Grassy Sandstone Fynbos, Matjiesfontein Quartzite Fynbos, Willowmore Gwarrieveld, Escarpment Arid Thicket, Eastern Gwarrieveld
Description
It grows in stony clay or sandy flats and slopes.
Threats
A very small proportion (<5%) of this species' range has been converted to crop fields. Subpopulations across the southern Great Karoo are potentially threatened by extensive habitat loss, should planned large-scale shale gas extraction go ahead. This threat is however likely to affect less than 30% of its distribution range, and therefore it is unlikely to lead to Moraea crispa becoming in danger of extinction.
Population

There is no data available on the population of Moraea crispa.
