Notes
The identity of this species is uncertain because the type collection has poorly preserved flowers. Moreover, the original locality is unknown. A figure published in Flowering Plants of South Africa shows a tall plant with a branched stem and unusual deep purple-coloured flowers with a narrow cylindrical upper perianth tube. The type specimen has short bracts reminiscent of the southern Cape W. wilmaniae. However the flowers of W. wilmaniae do not correspond with W. vittata. It seems best to treat this species as doubtful and exclude it from the number of recognised species (Goldblatt 1989).
