Assessor(s)
L. von Staden
Justification
EOO 8391 km², this species is still fairly common, but declining across its range due to habitat loss and overgrazing. It is estimated to occur at between 10 and 15 locations.
Distribution
Endemism
South African endemic
Provincial distribution
Western Cape
Range
Tanqua Karoo to Little Karoo.
Habitat and Ecology
Major system
Terrestrial
Major habitats
Succulent Karoo
Description
Karroid scrub in loamy sand.
Threats
Threatened by habitat loss to agricultural expansion (mainly vineyards and orchards) around Calitzdorp, Barrydale and Oudtshoorn, where loamy alluvial soils on floodplains are extensively cultivated. It is also threatened by overgrazing across its range, as most areas in the Little Karoo are affected by overgrazing.
Population

This species is abundant in loamy soils in Apronveld and Gannaveld. Plants are highly palatable, and its presence indicates areas where grazing is well managed (Vlok and Schutte-Vlok 2010).

Population trend
Decreasing
