Justification
An extremely localized endemic (EOO 2 km², AOO <1 km²), known from one location, and declining due to ongoing habitat loss to fruit orchards, timber plantations, and competition from alien invasive plants. It therefore qualifies for listing as Critically Endangered under criterion B.
Distribution
Endemism
South African endemic
Provincial distribution
Western Cape
Range
This species is found in Palmiet River Valley, south of Elgin.
Habitat and Ecology
Major system
Terrestrial
Major habitats
Kogelberg Sandstone Fynbos
Description
Plants grow in sandy flats in fynbos.
Threats
Historical records indicate that this species was formerly possibly more widespread in the Elgin Valley, but this area is now extensively transformed, mainly to fruit orchards and timber plantations. The currently only known subpopulation occurs on the edge of orchards and timber plantations, where it is threatened by ongoing habitat loss as well as competition from unmanaged alien invasive plants. The area is also under consideration for a water-storage scheme, and dam construction is a potential threat.
