Scientific Name | Erica oakesiorum E.G.H.Oliv. |
Higher Classification | Dicotyledons |
Family | ERICACEAE |
National Status |
Status and Criteria | Endangered B1ab(iii,v)+2ab(iii,v); C2a(i) |
Assessment Date | 2008/04/30 |
Assessor(s) | R.C. Turner, R. Koopman & E.G.H. Oliver |
Justification | A range-restricted species (EOO 43 km², AOO <5 km²). There are six known locations, but the species is possibly locally extinct at two of these due to too frequent fire. Subpopulations are typically small, consisting of fewer than 250 plants. We suspect that the total population is fewer than 2 500 individuals. Invasive alien pines and too frequent fires are causing a continuing decline. |
Distribution |
Endemism | South African endemic |
Provincial distribution | Western Cape |
Range | Riviersonderend Mountains, from Genadendal to Pilaarkop. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | South Sonderend Sandstone Fynbos |
Description | Fynbos, on south-facing slopes, 400-1400 m. |
Threats |
At least two subpopulations are already extinct due to too frequent fire, and an increasing fire frequency continues to be a threat to this reseeder. The southern slopes of the Riviersonderend Mountains is furthermore densely invaded by alien invasive pines, and these are present at all known locations, and are outcompeting native plants, causing ongoing population decline. |
Population |
A very localized species, occurring as small subpopulations in specialized seepage habitat. The smallest subpopulation recorded on the lower slopes above Genadendal consists of only three plants, while the largest subpopulations have no more than 100 mature individuals. It is estimated that the population size is less than 2500 mature individuals.
