Justification | A localized habitat specialist, occurring at an estimated five to 10 locations within a restricted area (EOO 1547 km²), where it is threatened by competition from rapidly spreading alien invasive plants in at least two known locations, but possibly more. |
Distribution |
Endemism | South African endemic |
Provincial distribution | Western Cape |
Range | Mountains north of Ceres to the Riviersonderend Mountains near Genadendal. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | Winterhoek Sandstone Fynbos, North Sonderend Sandstone Fynbos, Hawequas Sandstone Fynbos |
Description | Sandstone fynbos on upper slopes. |
Threats |
Alien invasive plants are present in this subspecies' habitat between Wemmershoek Peak and Franschhoek Pass, as well as on the Riviersonderend Mountains above Genadendal, and have been spreading rapidly in the past 10-15 years. |
Population |
This subspecies is currently known from four locations, all from fairly accessible areas. It is likely that more subpopulations exist on the higher mountain peaks between the Wemmershoek Mountains and Ceres, where it is also highly likely to be threatened by competition from alien invasive plants.
