Justification
This species has a limited distribution range and has an extent of occurrence (EOO) of 27 km² and area of occupancy (AOO) of 20 km². It is known from three locations, and the population is experiencing declines due to overgrazing and trampling by livestock, road construction, alien plant invasion, and illegal collection for the horticultural trade. It therefore qualifies as Endangered under criterion B.
Distribution
Endemism
South African endemic
Provincial distribution
Western Cape
Range
This species is restricted to the Nardouw Mountain in the Western Cape Province, South Africa.
Habitat and Ecology
Major system
Terrestrial
Major habitats
Bokkeveld Sandstone Fynbos
Description
It occurs in seasonally waterlogged seepage areas amongst flat sandstone rocks.
Threats
It has historically lost suitable habitat due to road construction. The quality of its habitat is deteriorating due to trampling and grazing by livestock. Areas surrounding this species' habitat have been transformed for crop farming, but this species is highly localised, and their rocky habitat prevents agricultural cultivation at present. It is additionally threatened by illegal collection to supply the specialist succulent trade. The spread of alien invasive species, Acacia cyclops, along seasonal streams where the Haemanthus population occurs further threatens this species.
Population

The population size is estimated to be fewer than 1000 mature individuals, based on surveys conducted in 2004, with one subpopulation recorded to have approximately 400 plants, the other two subpopulations have less than 200 mature individuals each. Illegal collection, competition with invasive alien species, and the transformation of suitable habitat threaten this species' persistence, and the population trend is declining.

Decreasing
Conservation
It is not currently conserved in any formally protected area.
