Justification
A recently discovered, highly localized habitat specialist currently known from one small subpopulation of about 300 plants. It occurs in a remote area and has no known threats.
Distribution
Endemism
South African endemic
Provincial distribution
Northern Cape
Range
Kamiesberg.
Habitat and Ecology
Major system
Freshwater
Major habitats
Namaqualand Granite Renosterveld
Description
Shallow temporary pools in depressions on granite rocks.
Threats
The only known subpopulation occurs in a remote area where there are no immediate threats. Land use in the Kamiesberg is largely stock farming, however this species occurs in unpalatable granite fynbos, and it is unlikely that livestock will be introduced to the site (Roux et al. 2009).
Population

The Kamiesberg, a known centre of endemism, has been surveyed for new species of Isoetes since 2001. Isoetes eludens was discovered in 2007, and is currently known from a single subpopulation of between 250 and 300 plants (Roux et al. 2009). Evidently a very rare species, there may however be a few undiscovered subpopulations, and further surveys are required. The population is not suspected to be declining.

Population trend
Stable
Notes
Another population of Isoetes from the Calvinia district resembles I. eludens. The genus is under revision, and the distribution range of this species needs to be confirmed.
