Justification
EOO 31 999 km², there is ongoing habitat loss due to urban and agricultural expansion and alien plant invasion. However, this taxon occurs at more than 30 locations and subpopulations are not severely fragmented.
Distribution
Endemism
South African endemic
Provincial distribution
Free State, Gauteng, Mpumalanga
Range
Johannesburg, Pretoria, Wakkerstroom and Sasolburg.
Habitat and Ecology
Major system
Terrestrial
Major habitats
Grassland
Description
Black turf marshes.
Threats
Threatened by habitat loss and fragmentation due to urban development, crop cultivation and invasive plant species.
Population

In 2009 this taxon was listed as Near Threatened as it was then known from fewer than 20 locations, since 2005 as a result of intensive surveys in Gauteng, 17 new subpopulations have been found. We suspect that should similar surveys be conducted in the Free State and Mpumalanga many more subpopulations will be discovered. Subpopulation abundance data exists for 25 known populations, of these only six have low numbers of individuals (less than 100). It is likely that even small subpopulations of this species will remain viable as they have no specialist pollinator requirements. The population is not severely fragmented.
