Justification
This taxon has a restricted range, with an extent of occurrence (EOO) of 4952-6488 km². It continues to decline across most of its range, but is still fairly common, and remains at more than 10 locations. Therefore it nearly meets the threshold for Vulnerable under criterion B.
Distribution
Endemism
South African endemic
Provincial distribution
Limpopo, Mpumalanga
Range
This variety occurs in Limpopo and Mpumalanga provinces, from Roossenekal and Belfast to the Barberton Mountains.
Habitat and Ecology
Major system
Terrestrial
Major habitats
Steenkampsberg Montane Grassland, Lydenburg Thornveld, Sekhukhune Montane Grassland, Barberton Montane Grassland
Description
It occurs on rocky slopes and in granite outcrops in montane grassland.
Threats
At least 30% of this taxon's habitat is already irreversibly modified. Most habitat loss was to commercial timber plantations between Belfast, Dullstroon and Lydenburg in Mpumalanga, and also in the mountains south of Barberton. Current threats include habitat loss to mining and quarrying, development - particularly golf estates, as well as competition from alien invasive plants.
Population

Field surveys indicate that this variety is common between Dullstroom and Roossenekal, but elsewhere it is rarer. A continuing decline is inferred from ongoing habitat loss and degradation.
