Scientific Name | Aloe vogtsii Reynolds |
Higher Classification | Monocotyledons |
Family | ASPHODELACEAE |
National Status |
Status and Criteria | Near Threatened B1ab(iii)+2ab(iii) |
Assessment Date | 2019/05/02 |
Assessor(s) | L. von Staden |
Justification | Aloe vogtsii is a range-restricted species, with an extent of occurrence (EOO) of 1558 km², and an area of occupancy (AOO) of 112 km². It is declining across its range due to ongoing habitat loss and degradation, but is still common, persisting at more than 10 locations. Therefore it nearly meets the criteria threshold for Vulnerable under criterion B. |
Distribution |
Endemism | South African endemic |
Provincial distribution | Limpopo |
Range | This species is endemic to the summit of the Soutpansberg mountains in northern Limpopo Province. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | Soutpansberg Mountain Bushveld |
Description | It occurs in tall montane mistbelt grassland and woodland, 1400-1700 m. |
Threats |
Between 20 and 30% of this range-restricted endemic's habitat is already irreversibly modified, predominantly for timber plantations and agriculture. Habitat loss is ongoing, due to expanding rural settlements and agriculture, particularly macadamia plantations. It is also potentially threatened by habitat degradation due to overgrazing and competition from alien invasive plants across its range. |
Population |
Aloe vogtsii is the most common of the Soutpansberg's endemic Aloes (Hahn 2002). A continuing decline is inferred from ongoing habitat loss.
