Family
ASPHODELACEAE
National Status
Status and Criteria
Least Concern

Justification
Aloe khamiesensis is a widespread, but poorly known species. Accessible subpopulations were threatened by succulent collecting in the past, but this threat has ceased. This species' habitat is remote and botanically poorly explored, and it is likely to be under-collected, rather than rare or threatened.

Provincial distribution
Northern Cape
Range
This species is endemic to the Northern Cape, South Africa, occurring in Namaqualand and on the Bokkeveld Escarpment, between Steinkopf and Nieuwoudtville.
Habitat and Ecology

Terrestrial
Major habitats
Succulent Karoo
Description
It occurs on rocky outcrops in succulent karoo.
Threats
Aloe khamiesensis was previously considered vulnerable due to the removal of plants from the wild for succulent collections (Victor 2002, Van Wyk and Smith 2003). Aloe species were enthusiastically collected in the 1960s and 1970s, but most species are now well established in cultivation. Aloe khamiesensis is however difficult to cultivate and does not thrive outside its natural habitat (Van Wyk and Smith 2003). It may therefore be potentially still vulnerable to opportunistic collecting. Trade monitoring by the South African Scientific Authority indicates that it is in trade, but demand for this species is not high.
Population

Aloe khamiesensis is known from only a few collections, with most dating from the 1930s. It is however suspected to be under-sampled, as its habitat is remote and botanically poorly explored. The population trend is not known, and more field surveys are needed to determine the impact of collecting on the population.
