Assessment Date | 2019/03/13 |
Assessor(s) | L. von Staden & R.R. Klopper |
Justification | Aloe hahnii is a range-restricted (EOO 2052 km²), but locally common species estimated to occur at more than 20 locations It is declining due to ongoing habitat loss and degradation, particularly in the eastern parts of its range, and therefore nearly meets the threshold for Vulnerable under criterion B. |
Distribution |
Endemism | South African endemic |
Provincial distribution | Limpopo |
Range | This species is endemic to the Blouberg and Soutpansberg in northern Limpopo Province. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | Soutpansberg Mountain Bushveld, Soutpansberg Summit Sourveld |
Description | It occurs in sandy soils in grassland and forest margins in the mistbelt region, sometimes in full shade in low closed woodland. |
Threats |
About 30% of this species' habitat has been lost, predominantly to forestry plantations and fruit orchards. Some subpopulations on the eastern side of the Soutpansberg are threatened by ongoing habitat loss to expanding rural settlements and crop cultivation. Subpopulations on the western side of the Soutpansberg are not threatened, with much of this species' habitat protected in private conservancies. Mining is a potential threat to plants on the Blouberg. |
Population |
Aloe hahnii is locally common. A continuing population decline is inferred from ongoing habitat loss and degradation.
