Taxonomy
Scientific Name
Haworthia decipiens Poelln.
Higher Classification
Monocotyledons
Family
ASPHODELACEAE
National Status
Status and Criteria
Data Deficient - Taxonomically Problematic
Assessment Date
2014/03/19
Assessor(s)
L. von Staden, R.R. Klopper & J.C. Manning
Justification
A variable species that is difficult to distinguish from other Haworthia species, particularly Haworthia cooperi. Until taxonomically resolved, the risk of extinction of H. decipiens cannot be assessed.
Distribution
Endemism
South African endemic
Provincial distribution
Eastern Cape
Habitat and Ecology
Major system
Terrestrial
Population
Population trend
Unknown
Notes
Haworthia has been plagued with an overprolification of names, recognising variation over similarity, and causing much confusion (Bayer and Manning 2012). The genus needs to be revised using population-level molecular techniques in order for species concepts to be resolved (J.C. Manning pers. comm. 2014).
