| Scientific Name | Haworthia mirabilis (Haw.) Haw. | Higher Classification | Monocotyledons | Family | ASPHODELACEAE |
National Status | Status and Criteria | Data Deficient - Taxonomically Problematic | Assessment Date | 2014/03/19 | Assessor(s) | L. von Staden, R.R. Klopper & J.C. Manning | Justification | A taxonomically problematic complex, recognised as four separate species by Bayer in Manning and Goldblatt (2012), but included in one species with 17 varieties in Bayer and Manning (2012). Until taxonomically resolved, this species' risk of extinction cannot be assessed. |
Distribution | Endemism | South African endemic | Provincial distribution | Western Cape |
Habitat and Ecology | Major system | Terrestrial | Major habitats | Mossel Bay Shale Renosterveld, Eastern Ruens Shale Renosterveld, Central Ruens Shale Renosterveld, Western Ruens Shale Renosterveld, Greyton Shale Fynbos, Agulhas Sand Fynbos, Hartenbos Dune Thicket |
Population | Population trend | Unknown |
Notes | Haworthia has been plagued with an overprolification of names, recognising variation over similarity, and causing much confusion (Bayer and Manning 2012). The genus needs to be revised using population-level molecular techniques in order for species concepts to be resolved (J.C. Manning pers. comm. 2014). |
