Taxonomy
Scientific Name
Haworthia pygmaea Poelln.

ASPHODELACEAE
National Status
Status and Criteria
Data Deficient - Taxonomically Problematic
Assessment Date
2014/03/24
Assessor(s)
L. von Staden, R.R. Klopper & J.C. Manning
Justification
A taxonomically problematic species that is difficult to distinguish from H. retusa, as well as H. mutica and some forms of H. emelyae. Until resolved, its risk of extinction cannot be assessed.
Distribution
Endemism
South African endemic
Provincial distribution
Western Cape
Range
Riversdale to Groot Brakrivier.
Habitat and Ecology
Major system
Terrestrial
Major habitats
Fynbos
Description
Rocky outcrops in coastal renosterveld and fynbos.
Population
Population trend
Decreasing
Notes
Haworthia has been plagued with an overprolification of names, recognising variation over similarity, and causing much confusion (Bayer and Manning 2012). The genus needs to be revised using population-level molecular techniques in order for species concepts to be resolved (J.C. Manning pers. comm. 2014).
