Higher Classification | Monocotyledons |
Family | RESTIONACEAE |
Synonyms | Ischyrolepis cincinnata (Mast.) H.P.Linder |
National Status |
Status and Criteria | Least Concern |

Assessor(s) | L. von Staden |
Justification | Restio cincinnatus has a restricted distribution range, with an extent of occurrence (EOO) of 4645 km². It is a common species, and only a very small proportion of the population is currently threatened. It is therefore not yet in danger of extinction, and is listed as Least Concern. |
Distribution |
Endemism | South African endemic |
Provincial distribution | Northern Cape, Western Cape |
Range | This species is endemic to South Africa. It has a limited distribution in the Western Cape, where it occurs on the Cape Peninsula, and in the Riviersonderend and Kleinrivier mountains. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | Peninsula Sandstone Fynbos, Cape Flats Dune Strandveld, South Sonderend Sandstone Fynbos, Peninsula Granite Fynbos, Hangklip Sand Fynbos, Overberg Sandstone Fynbos, Cape Flats Sand Fynbos, Western Coastal Shale Band Vegetation |
Description | It occurs on sandy flats on the Cape Peninsula, elsewhere it occurs on rock ledges and in gullies. |
Threats |
Restio cincinnatus has lost habitat to urban expansion on the Cape Peninsula in the past, but remaining habitat on the Peninsula is now protected, and habitat loss is no longer a significant threat. The subpopulation in the Riviersonderend Mountain is threatened by competition from uncontrolled alien invasive plants. |
Population |
This species is common on the southern Cape Peninsula, but rarer elsewhere in its range. It is known from three disjunct subpopulations.
