National Status
Status and Criteria
Critically Endangered B2ab(iii,v); C2a(i)
Assessment Date

Assessor(s)

Justification
This species has an extent of occurrence (EOO) of less than 1600 km² and an area of occupancy (AOO) of less than 10 km². Five small, severely fragmented subpopulations each consisting of fewer than 50 plants remain after more than 70% of the habitat has been transformed for crop cultivation. The total population of this palatable species is suspected to be fewer than 250 plants and it continues to decline due to overgrazing. It is therefore assessed as Critically Endangered under criteria B and C.

Range
It occurs from Bredasdorp to Kogmanskloof and Potberg.

Description
Plants grow in shale, clay soil.
Threats
Agriculture is a past, severe threat and more than 70% of its habitat was ploughed between 1940 and 1960 (Farmers in lower breede river valley pers. comm.). This species is a long lived shrub with 3 generations being longer than the time since ploughing. Livestock grazing is an ongoing threat which is severe as species highly palatable.
