Threats
This species is threatened by severe ongoing habitat loss and degradation across its range in South Africa, as a result of mining and overgrazing. In the lower Gariep Valley east of Alexander Bay, thousands of livestock congregate at a livestock outpost right next to a subpopulation of this species. A possible second subpopulation, known from historical records is threatened by severe habitat loss and degradation as a result of mining, and surveys are needed to confirm that the population is still extant.
Population

This species has a very localized distribution in South Africa, where it is known from a 20 km stretch along the south bank of the Orange River. Population decline due to overgrazing has been observed. It is somewhat more widespread in southern Namibia, but records are sparse and disjunct from the South African population. It may be under sampled in Namibia due to access restrictions on diamond mining areas.
