National Status
Status and Criteria
Critically Endangered A2c; B1ab(iii)+2ab(iii); C2a(ii)

Justification
Previously only known from the type specimen, but relocated near Barrydale in a small fragment of renosterveld in 1995. At this time there were 60 plants, but in 2004 during a second survey of the same site no plants were found. We suspect that this may be due to veld not having been burnt for a while, but it may also be the result of overgrazing. Almost 88% of the vegetation unit where this species occurs has been cultivated for wheat, this decline in habitat has taken place over the past 70 years, less than three generations of this long-lived resprouter (generation length is suspected to be over 50 years). It is therefore listed as Critically Endangered under criteria A, B and C.
Distribution
Endemism
South African endemic
Provincial distribution

Range
It is found in Barrydale.
Habitat and Ecology
Major system
Terrestrial
Major habitats
Montagu Shale Renosterveld
Description
Plants grow in renosterveld on shale.
Threats
Almost 88% of this species' habitat is cultivated, and only 10% remains in pristine condition. Most of the habitat loss occurred over the past 70 years, which is within three generations for this species. Habitat loss to cultivation is continuing, and surviving plants in renosterveld remnants are further threatened by overgrazing, road construction and a lack of fire.
Population

This species was previously known only from a Drège collection from an unspecified locality in the Swartberg Mountains. It was rediscovered by Jan Vlok in renosterveld near Barrydale in 1995. At the time, there were ± 60 plants. When the subpopulation was revisited in 2004 no plants could be found. This may be due to a lack of fire or that the plants have been grazed out.
