Scientific Name | Gnidia parvula Wolley-Dod |
Higher Classification | Dicotyledons |
Family | THYMELAEACEAE |
National Status |
Status and Criteria | Data Deficient - Insufficient Information |
Assessment Date | 2015/08/04 |
Assessor(s) | D. van der Colff, L. von Staden & H. Stummer |
Justification | A poorly known species, last recorded in the early 1900s. It is likely to be threatened, or possibly even extinct, but may also just be an aberrant form of a more common and widespread species - the genus Gnidia is taxonomically problematic and in need of revision. Based on available data, this species' risk of extinction cannot be assessed. |
Distribution |
Endemism | South African endemic |
Provincial distribution | Western Cape |
Range | Cape Peninsula, possibly extending to Durbanville. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | Fynbos |
Description | Uncertain, possibly shale or granite fynbos. |
Threats |
Habitat loss to urban expansion may have caused population decline in the past. It is likely to be threatened by habitat degradation due inappropriate fire management and competition from alien invasive plants. If it occurs around Durbanville, habitat loss to urban expansion is likely to be a severe, ongoing threat. |
Population |
A rare and very poorly known species, but possibly overlooked. Gnidia is in need of revision, and specimens are difficult to identify with certainty. The type specimen was collected on Signal Hill on the Cape Peninsula, where it was last seen in the early 1900s, but may be overlooked. Beaumont in Manning and Goldblatt (2012) indicates that it also occurs near Durbanville, but no specimens from the Durbanville area can be located either in the National Herbarium, Pretoria, or the Compton Herbarium, Cape Town. Volunteers of the Custodians of Rare and Endangered Wildflowers (CREW) Programme have systematically surveyed remaining fragments of lowland fynbos in the Durbanville area over many years, but have not yet recorded this species.
