Scientific Name | Lasiopogon ponticulus Hilliard |
Higher Classification | Dicotyledons |
Family | ASTERACEAE |
National Status |
Status and Criteria | Near Threatened* B1ab(iii)+2ab(iii) |
Assessment Date | 2015/05/21 |
Assessor(s) | L. von Staden |
Justification | This species has a restricted range in South Africa (national EOO 368 km²), where it is estimated to occur at fewer than 10 locations and declining due to ongoing habitat loss and degradation. The South African population is continuous with Namibia, where it is more widespread and not as severely threatened, and therefore the national status is downgraded by one category following IUCN regional assessment procedures. |
Distribution |
Endemism | Not endemic to South Africa |
Provincial distribution | Northern Cape |
Range | Southern Namibia and western Richtersveld. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | Western Gariep Lowland Desert |
Description | Sandy flats and hills, often along dry watercourses. |
Threats |
In South Africa this species is threatened by habitat degradation, and particularly trampling, across its range in the Richtersveld. Along the Gariep Valley east of Arrisdrift it is also threatened by habitat loss and degradation due to mining. |
Population |
This species is rare and very poorly known in South Africa, where it is known from only two collections, one from a site that is now an open-cast mine, and the second from an unspecified locality in the Richtersveld. Plants are cryptic and easily overlooked, and likely to be more common than records suggest. However, even if it is widespread across the western Richtersveld, it is unlikely to occur at more than 10 locations, due to the wide-ranging impacts of overgrazing. It is more widespread, and presumably more common in Namibia, where it occurs as far as Lüderitz.
