Scientific Name | Felicia nigrescens Grau |
Higher Classification | Dicotyledons |
Family | ASTERACEAE |
National Status |
Status and Criteria | Endangered B1ab(iii,v)+2ab(iii,v); C2a(i) |
Assessment Date | 2011/06/14 |
Assessor(s) | N.A. Helme & D. Raimondo |
Justification | Known from three to five locations (EOO 652 km², AOO <10 km²), five remaining subpopulations have fewer than 250 mature individuals each. Threats include agricultural expansion, low cost housing development, quarrying, road expansion, and invasion by alien annual grasses caused by eutrophication from fertiliser runoff. Two of the four remaining subpopulations are rapidly declining due to trampling and overgrazing. |
Distribution |
Endemism | South African endemic |
Provincial distribution | Western Cape |
Range | Caledon to Cape Agulhas. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | Overberg Dune Strandveld, Western Ruens Shale Renosterveld, Elim Ferricrete Fynbos |
Description | Shale renosterveld, in seasonally wet, saline clays with little vegetation. |
Threats |
Agricultural and urban expansion are severe threats. Furthermore, agricultural runoff is aiding invasion by alien grass. The infilling of wetlands for development at the Caledon rifle range is a potential threat. A subpopulation at Jongensklip is threatened by quarrying and road expansion. Two of the four remaining subpopulations are threatened by livestock overgrazing and trampling. |
Population |
All subpopulations are small and have less than 250 individuals.
