Scientific Name | Oldenburgia grandis (Thunb.) Baill. |
Higher Classification | Dicotyledons |
Family | ASTERACEAE |
Synonyms | Arnica grandis Thunb., Oldenburgia arbuscula DC. |
Common Names | Donkey's Ears (e), Suurberg Daisycushion (e), Suurberg Kussingbos (a) |
National Status |
Status and Criteria | Least Concern |
Assessment Date | 2021/11/04 |
Assessor(s) | H. Mtshali |
Justification | This Eastern Cape endemic species has a restricted distribution and it is currently not threatened. However, in some parts of its range the habitat is declining due to infestation by alien plants and too frequent fires. It is therefore assessed as Least Concern. |
Distribution |
Endemism | South African endemic |
Provincial distribution | Eastern Cape |
Range | This species is endemic to the Eastern Cape, where it occurs from Port Elizabeth, Uitenhage, Suurberg Mountains, Grahamstown and Port Alfred. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | Kouga Grassy Sandstone Fynbos, Suurberg Quartzite Fynbos |
Description | This small tree species is restricted to quartzite outcrops, 500-690 m. It has fire-resistant bark and it resprouts after fire. Flowers are pollinated by birds. |
Threats |
This species' habitat is in rocky terrain and is unlikely to be lost to development or crop cultivation. However, small and isolated subpopulations occur in areas that are infested with alien invasive species, and if these are not managed they are likely to replace native species. Too frequent fires is causing ongoing habitat degradation in some parts of this species' range, and it is likely to result in high mortality levels of reproductive individuals within a small, isolated population. |
Population |
Large proportions of this species occur in protected areas where they are less affected by alien invasive plants (Swart, 2008).
