Justification | EOO 1047 km², and known from two, possibly three locations, but may be under-sampled. More than 80% of its habitat has already been lost to agricultural expansion, and population decline due to ongoing habitat loss and degradation continues. |
Distribution |
Endemism | South African endemic |
Provincial distribution | Western Cape |
Range | Overberg between Bredasdorp and Riversdale. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | Eastern Ruens Shale Renosterveld, Swellendam Silcrete Fynbos |
Description | Shale and silcrete soils. |
Threats |
Chrysocoma flava occurs in Critically Endangered Eastern Rûens Shale Renosterveld, of which at least 80% has already been lost to expanding crop fields, and only small isolated fragments remain. Recent field observations indicate that remaining subpopulations are threatened by ongoing habitat degradation due to overstocking of habitat fragments. |
Population |
This species was previously known only from the type collection from near Riversdale, dating from 1929. Recently, it has been observed at two locations between Bredasdorp and Swellendam, suggesting that it has a wider range across the eastern Overberg than previously known, and is quite likely overlooked and more common than records indicate (J. Groenewald pers. comm.). Less than 20% of its habitat however remains intact, and most remaining subpopulations are likely to be confined to isolated fragments. More field surveys are needed to better understand the range size and abundance of this species.
