This species has a restricted range, with an extent of occurrence (EOO) of 9152 km². It is known from 10-15 locations and is likely to continue to decline due to ongoing habitat loss and degradation.
Not endemic to South Africa
Provincial distribution
Mpumalanga escarpment from Lydenburg to Piet Retief. It also occurs in adjacent areas in Swaziland, and with a few isolated occurrences in Mozambique and Zimbabwe.

Long Tom Pass Montane Grassland, Steenkampsberg Montane Grassland, Northern Escarpment Quartzite Sourveld, KaNgwane Montane Grassland, Northern Escarpment Dolomite Grassland, Barberton Montane Grassland, Eastern Highveld Grassland, Lydenburg Thornveld
It occurs in submontane grassland and rocky hillsides in Protea grasslands.
Nearly 50% of this species' grassland habitat has been irreversibly modified, predominantly due to establishment of exotic timber plantations. It is suspected to be locally extinct at four locations known from historical records. Land cover data indicate ongoing sporadic habitat loss.

This species is known from only a few, scattered records, but may be overlooked due to taxonomic problems.
