Scientific Name | Agathosma glandulosa (Thunb.) Sond. |
Higher Classification | Dicotyledons |
Family | RUTACEAE |
Synonyms | Diosma glandulosa Thunb., Hartogia glandulosa Kuntze |
National Status |
Status and Criteria | Endangered A2c; B1ab(ii,iii,iv,v) |
Assessment Date | 2006/07/18 |
Assessor(s) | T. Trinder-Smith & D. Raimondo |
Justification | A population reduction of at least 50% is estimated based on 70% habitat loss to wheat and vineyard cultivation in the past 70 years (generation length >50 years). Its extent of occurrence (EOO) is less than 2000 km² and eight severely fragmented remaining subpopulations continue to decline due to ongoing habitat loss to urban development, expanding crop cultivation and overgrazing. It is therefore assessed as Endangered under criteria A and B. |
Distribution |
Endemism | South African endemic |
Provincial distribution | Western Cape |
Range | This species is found in Malmesbury. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | Swartland Shale Renosterveld, Swartland Granite Renosterveld, Swartland Alluvium Renosterveld, Boland Granite Fynbos, Atlantis Sand Fynbos |
Description | Plants grow in renosterveld on Malmesbury shale. |
Threats |
Cultivation for wheat and vineyards farming is a past threat, which has left more than 70% of this species' habitat transformed. Most of the transformation took place since 1940, which is less than 3 generations of this long-lived resprouting species (generation time is >30 years). As renosterveld fragments are often open to livestock, many are grazed and trampled by livestock (T.Trinder-Smith). Many fragments around Malmesbury are being lost to urbanization. |
Population |
Population trend | Decreasing |
Conservation |
It forms part of the Renosterveld conservation plan. |
