Assessment Date

Justification
A population reduction of at least 50% is estimated based on habitat loss to wheat cultivation between 1940 and 2010, which is within three generations of this long-lived resprouter (generation length >50 years). EOO 631 km² and AOO <150 km², between six and 10 remaining locations are declining due to livestock grazing and alien plant invasion of the habitat.
Distribution
Endemism
South African endemic
Provincial distribution
Western Cape
Range
Southern Overberg between Heidelberg and Swellendam.
Habitat and Ecology
Major system
Terrestrial
Major habitats
Eastern Ruens Shale Renosterveld, Central Ruens Shale Renosterveld, Ruens Silcrete Renosterveld, Swellendam Silcrete Fynbos
Description
Clay loam soil on silcrete above 200 m.
Threats
Agricultural expansion has led to at least 50% habitat loss in the past, the majority of transformation of natural vegetation occurring between 1940 and 1960. One location is on an ostrich farm, where grazing and trampling is causing ongoing habitat degradation. Plants at another location is threatened by competition from alien invasive plants.
Population

Surveyed subpopulations are typically small, with the largest known subpopulation consisting of 500 individuals.
