Scientific Name | Crotalaria meyeriana Steud. |
Higher Classification | Dicotyledons |
Family | FABACEAE |
Synonyms | Crotalaria mollis E.Mey. |
National Status |
Status and Criteria | Near Threatened* B1ab(iii,v)+2ab(iii,v) |
Assessment Date | 2015/05/06 |
Assessor(s) | L. von Staden |
Justification | National EOO 545 km², plants at seven known locations continue to decline due to ongoing habitat loss and degradation. The South African population is continuous with the larger, stable Namibian population, and therefore the national status is downgraded by one category following IUCN regional assessment procedures. |
Distribution |
Endemism | Not endemic to South Africa |
Provincial distribution | Northern Cape |
Range | Southern Namibia, from Lüderitz southwards to the Gariep Valley. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | Western Gariep Hills Desert, Western Gariep Lowland Desert, Western Gariep Plains Desert |
Description | Deep sandy soils on coastal plain, dry riverbeds and inland dunes. |
Threats |
This species is threatened across its range in South Africa by habitat destruction and degradation due to mining, as well as severe overgrazing due to overstocking of livestock. The impact of mining on the coastal plain between Alexander Bay and Sendelingsdrif extends far beyond the boundaries of mining properties, due to dust blowing from exposed mine dumps across the plains, burying many dwarf species such as this one. This species is not severely threatened in Namibia. |
Population |
This species is widespread and common in Namibia, but has a very restricted range in South Africa. The South African population is declining due to severe, ongoing habitat loss and degradation, but the Namibian population is larger and more stable, although some subpopulations also occur in mining areas.
