Taxonomy
Scientific Name
Indigofera floribunda N.E.Br.
Higher Classification
Dicotyledons
Family
FABACEAE
National Status
Status and Criteria
Data Deficient - Insufficient Information
Assessment Date
2017/09/28
Assessor(s)
L. von Staden
Justification
Indigofera is in need of taxonomic revision and many species are poorly known. This species is possibly restricted to a small area around Sabie, in which case it is likely to be in danger of extinction. However, based on currently available data its risk of extinction cannot be assessed.
Distribution
Endemism
South African endemic
Provincial distribution
Mpumalanga
Range
This species is endemic to South Africa, however, its distribution is uncertain. The type collection is from Mac Mac, north of Sabie in Mpumalanga. It is possibly confined to a small area around Sabie, but may extend as far south as Barberton.
Habitat and Ecology
Major system
Terrestrial
Major habitats
Northern Escarpment Quartzite Sourveld, Northern Escarpment Dolomite Grassland
Description
Its precise habitat requirements are not known. According to Retief and Herman (1997) it occurs along the margins of plantations.
Threats
If Indigofera floribunda is localized to the Sabie district, it is likely to have lost extensive habitat to timber plantations. Plantations are no longer expanding, but spreading, unmanaged alien invasive plants are causing ongoing degradation of remaining grassland fragments.
Population

This is a very poorly known and rarely collected species, last recorded in 1957. It may be overlooked due to taxonomic problems in Indigofera. The population trend is unknown.
